About a month ago, Lorie found a lump during a self breast exam. She went to the doctor, and after a biopsy was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time, she was 25 weeks pregnant. The original plan was to do surgery, then deliver the baby around 35 weeks and begin chemo. The surgeons performed a lumpectomy last week and found that the cancer had spread to 6 of her 9 lymph nodes. Plans changed… They were planning on doing a mastectomy yesterday, and beginning chemo treatments when Lorie entered her 3rd trimester. (I checked with a pharmacist friend, and there are some chemo treatments available that are “okay” for use during pregnancy.) After meeting on Tuesday morning, her team of doctors realized that they were dealing with more cancer than they thought, they didn’t do the mastectomy. Now, the plan is to give unborn Zachary the best chance that they can. I’m sure right now she and her family are in shock. I’m in tears right now thinking what she may be feeling and thinking- thinking that you may not be able to see your boys grow into men. You may not even be able to see them to their first day of kindergarten. Imagine her husband, Daryl, thinking that he may have to raise his boys without the love of his life. But our God is still a God of miracles and he hears the prayers of his people. My mom’s church is doing a 24/7 prayer vigil for Lorie and her family next week. Pray for Lorie, Daryl, Noah and (unborn) Zachary Johnson. W.
